Vocabulario para la celebración de Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving o Día de Acción de Gracias es una celebración muy especial en Estados Unidos, que se festeja el cuarto jueves de noviembre de cada año. Esta fecha conmemora la primera cosecha que obtuvieron los primeros peregrinos británicos en 1621, luego de un duro invierno, y el banquete que compartieron durante tres días con los nativos Wampanoag

Durante esta celebración se realizan cenas entre familias y amigos cercanos para dar gracias por todas las cosas buenas de la vida. Suelen compartir alimentos como pavo horneado, salsa de arándanos, puré de manzana, pastel de calabaza, entre otros. Además, se entregan detalles con sus seres queridos.   

A continuación, conocerás vocabulario en inglés sobre esta celebración, para la cena y algunos modismos que se utilizan:

Vocabulario sobre la celebración 

Tradition = the handing down of statements, beliefs, etc, by word of mouth or by practice. 

Grateful = expressing gratitude

Share = to divide and distribute something

Feast = any rich or large meal

Relatives = a member of one’s family.

Autumn = the season between summer and winter; also known as fall 

Pilgrim = an original settler in a region.

Vocabulario para la cena de Thanksgiving 

  Turkey = a large North American bird of the pheasant family.

Gravy = the fat and juices of cooked meat, often thickened and seasoned and used as a sauce.

Mashed potatoes = potatoes that have been boiled and crushed until they are smooth.

Corn = the kernels of this plant, used for food.

Cranberry = the sour red berry of certain plants of the heath family, used to make a sauce or juice

Pumpkin pie = is a dessert

Stuffing = Food used to stuff poultry, etc., before cooking.

Modismos de Thanksgiving 

To count your blessings – to be grateful for the good things in your life

To be stuffed – To be full and can’t eat anymore.

To go cold turkey – to suddenly stop a bad habit and suffer from it at the beginning. (This is often used when talking about a drug addict who suddenly stops taking drugs)

A stuffed shirt – a person who behaves in a very formal way and expects to be treated as someone very important

A blessing in disguise – something that at first appears to be bad or unlucky but is actually good

To talk turkey – to discuss a problem in a serious way with a real intention to solve it

To be a mixed blessing – something that has bad effects as well as advantages
