Even with a structure that supports learner training for all students, there are still some students who need extra help. These students tend to be true beginners, students who have been outside an academic environment for some time, and students with particular low levels of linguistic ability, even in Spanish. These students are referred to a tutoring program where an exploration begins as to what difficulties they face and what particular areas are of concern to them. Each student begins an individualized program of training where the tutor covers basic learning strategies and study skills.
Through this attention to learner training, significant experience has been developed in reference to specific strategy areas and study skills, including skill area strategies (reading, listening, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation), as well as training in specific learning tools (textbook, audio, materials, dictionaries, IPA). These trainings are available to students as part of the classroom experience and also through open “tutoring” sessions where as many as 200 students attend each month voluntarily.
